Got a call from Twig today around lunchtime.
Our freezer downtown, full of chicken, ground beef and our other meats, quit working sometime early in the weekend. Tim, the custodian, went in the kitchen this morning and saw a puddle in front of the door. Poor guy. He opened it and was hit with the smell of a freezer full of meat gone bad.
And then, he cleaned it up.
He could've called us and we'd have gone down there and done it.
He should've.
But because he's a great guy, he just went ahead and took care of it.
Tim's the Man.
So.......that was a lot of meat.
We try to stockpile things like chicken and ground beef until we have enough to do something or for special occasions. We'd just put up about 25 lbs of BBQ.
But it's okay.
First of all .....things happen. Mechanical mishaps never let you know they're coming. They just break down and you deal with it.
Secondly..... we had tonight taken care of and didn't miss a beat.
Most importantly...... every piece of meat in that freezer had been provided by God, and God has yet to fail us. He can replace everything we lost and more. Who knows? Maybe that's why this happened. He's got something coming and we're gonna need that freezer for something else.
I don't know. But I know God is still God and He'll take care of our needs.

Here's a strange combination for you: The folks we serve and Energy drinks.
We came into possession of about least 20 cases of SLAP FROST energy drink.
So as folks were leaving tonight we passed out 20 oz. cans of energy drinks. Just about everybody took one. I was wondering how they read the gesture. Did they think we felt they needed energy? Did they get the impression wanted them to get energized and do stuff?
I don't know.
I do know that the image of a bunch of homeless people walking around Wilmington in the middle of the night jacked up on energy drinks just makes me grin, though.
Glad I could help.
I also know know I let Cameron Elliot try one . He liked it. A lot. It's all I can do to take a swig of those things. I don't care for them.
I also gave Tim, the custodian, a case of them , sort of as a "Sorry you had to clean out the freezer" gesture. I guess it would have been nice for him to have had one before he did it, but.....
I let the kids split one around 8:30.
I should be getting.....

..... just made that our little blog "secret".
I had to try and get to Food Lion last Tuesday before they closed because they had 10 lb. bags of chicken leg quarters on sale for 4 bucks. I figured I'd wait to post and try to get to it tomorrow and BOOM....it's a week later and I still haven't done it.
My bad.
Last week was great. I mentioned the week before that someone had graciously donated 3 Boston Butts. Well, I went to pick them up and by the time I got to the church, somebody donated 7 more! That's 10 total Boston Butts total.
Last week we chopped them up into BBQ and used half and saved half for another night.
I know we're in the EASTERN BBQ area and vinegar-based sauce is how we're supposed to do it, but our guys really like it when we mix it with Sonny's Sweet BBQ sauce and serve it wet.
We served almost 100 people last week.
This week we had meatball subs, but we did it a little different than usual. Instead of serving the meatballs whole, we quartered them to make it easier to eat and less likely to roll off the roll.
And we used top split hot dog buns so it would sit on the plate and hold the meatballs better. Our last wrinkle was instead of putting cheese on top of the sandwich, we opened the roll and put it in the bottom so it wouldn't fall everywhere and would melt faster.
What can I say? We're thinkers.

I wish you could see how good some of the youth are at interacting with our friends at the first stop. They do such a great job of listening and showing them how glad we are they came to eat with us.
The second stop started out with just six and added one as we got going. Having just a few is kinda good because everyone has something to do all the time and you don't have time to take your foot off the gas, it's just head down, non-stop, serve it 'til you look up and the line is gone and it's 20 after 9.
Just like back in the early days.
I can remember getting it done with just me, Gary McKnight and about 3 or 4 kids.
It seems like forever since we used to do it out in the kitchen at the Activity Center. We'd cook it (in the hottest kitchen in the world) pack it up, load it up and then drive the truck and a van downtown, unload it and serve it out. Then we'd load everything and everyone up and drive back to the Activity Center. It was a lot of doggone work and we had to hustle because we had to drive cross town. But I remember thinking we had to do it at the Activity Center because it was central and closer for parents to drop off and pick up kids. I thought doing it downtown would keep parents from bringing youth. Then the Activity Center renovation forced us downtown to the kitchen at the church anyway
I'm such a moron sometimes.
It worked out so well we decided not to even go back to the A.C. and its new kitchen when it was done. Losing kids because we were downtown? We had a string of weeks with 25+ kids for about a month this past summer! Parents drop off kids by the carload every week. We have a lot more youth participation than we did at the A.C.
Being downtown has been more successful than I ever thought it would.
And it had to be forced on me.
Forced on me because I figured success would be determined by my wisdom at planning and thinking I knew how things would work best. Forced on me because I was telling God stuff instead of asking Him stuff......I needed to quit overthinking and acting like I knew everything and let God lead.
I'm still trying to get better at that.
As far as my confession earlier about being a moron, I'd appreciate it if the 2 or 3 of you who read this .......

...4 college girls at the 24/7 Karaoke diner at 2 a.m.
You know the breeze that wasn't there last week.
Well , it wasn't there tonight either.
No breeze, nowhere. Warm and still.
WAYNE / STEVE / BLAKE / MICHAEL / ALYSSA / ELLEN / CECELIA / KATIE / LAURA / BRIEN / TWIG / TERESA / ANNA / SEAN / PEYSON / MERRITT / J.BOGGS / ALLISON / PRUDEN / CRAIG / and me were hard at it tonight.
Today was the first day back for NH County schools, so it didn't surprise me that there was not the same large number helping tonight that there has been for the past several weeks. It was good though, because the ones that came were kept hopping all night and that's fun.
We had such a positive response to Fried Bologna a couple of weeks ago, we did it again, along with Peanut Butter/Banana and PB&J sandwiches. It was a nice light meal on a warm night.

I don't do a good enough job letting people know who good God is to us. I don't do a good enough job here to y'all, or to the folks helping on Tuesday night. I'm going to try and do better.
I walked in the kitchen tonight and there was 2 large packs of paper plates and 2 large packs of cups on the table. I don't know who brought them but we needed them.
Somebody called me last week and said they would like to give us three Boston Butts to use for feeding. I'll go pick them up Saturday, already cooked and ready to go.
3 Boston Butts? NICE. Can you say "BBQ sandwiches." Yeah, I thought you could.
Somebody called me Sunday and told me Harris Teeter had a special that let you buy a bundle of items needed to cook hamburgers for only $6 and they had bought one for us.
God has never failed us and He never will. He has proven himself faithful in this. I never worry that we'll have something to serve each week. God provides.
Sean leaves this week to go back to school. He's a junior at Fairfield University in Connecticut. He's on the basketball team so keep an eye out for them and him on ESPN and wherever else you get your sports.
There's a raccoon that keeps showing up every week on the roof of the Mercy House while we're serving food. I'm pretty sure he's not there to see me, so I ignore him, but the others get pretty hyper about it.
Twig's son Sprig (Justin) is getting ready to enlist in the Air Force and pretty much waiting on them so he can go. Keep him and Twig in your prayers.

Not a drop of breeze anywhere tonight.
Figured I'd start out complaining and get it out of the way.

Twig was out of town and you know what that means........I didn't have to decide what to cook until the last minute.
but I went downtown to the church and laid stuff out for spaghetti anyway. I had some sauce frozen that i took out and some sausage to put in it. I also had a pan of pork chops and chicken 'n gravy to use. Then John Liverman called me around 2 and told me he had taken some ham and mashed potatoes down to the kitchen for me.
We got several heads of lettuce for salad and when all was said and done, we had a pile of food to serve tonight.

Still seeing an increase at the first stop. Not all at the beginning but a steady stream through the hour we're there.
This is Chris Armstrong's last week before he goes to school. Can't say enough good things about him. It has been amazing to watch him grow up and mature into the guy he is today. Carolina's lucky to get him.
Gonna be short tonight. Got an all day faculty meeting tomorrow. Yay.
God is good. He continues to provide for us in big and small, but always faithful, ways. It is our privilege to be His hands and feet on Tuesday nights and want to make sure He gets any glory for what is done. Some of the people we see every week we have been seeing since the first time we showed up there. I believe that they have been shown God's kingdom because youth and adults cared enough to consistently meet their needs on Tuesday nights for the past 7 years.
I am thankful for all the people who helped and been a part of this without ever showing up on Tuesday night.
I appreciate everyone who has ever prayed for us, and if you would.......

...I wasn't sure and I was asking them if I loved them.
All right, all right, .... as far as I know I'll be here on Tuesday nights from here on. I can't believe I missed all but two weeks since school got out. As far as I'm concerned summer is over. I'm driving the bus for the ATL Baseball trip this weekend and have to be at school the next day, so.... it's gone.
I walked out of the house yesterday and about choked. It was hot. Like an oven hot. Like, I don't want to be here hot. Being gone most of the summer spoiled me.
It was warm tonight, too. Hardly any breeze at the first stop and none at the second.
I really enjoyed being back. We had a lot of help tonight. I know I will forget some girls names. Sorry.

Watermelon, cantaloupe, and orange slices

My dad loved a Tomato sandwich. He would slice the tomato as thick as a burger, then smear mayonnaise on it and hit it with pepper until the whole thing was black. At the time, I thought he was nuts. As I've grown older and like tomatoes more than just in spaghetti sauce and hamburgers, I've gotten to where I can eat a Tomato sandwich every once in a while.
We went through a bunch tonight. Everybody got at least 2, and some came back for more.
We seen a flip flop in the stops lately. Big #'s at the first and less #'s at the second. Have no idea why. We'll see if it continues.
We're getting ready to say goodbye to a couple of longtime regulars because of college.
Josh Armstrong leaves for State this weekend.
Chris Armstrong leaves the following week for Chapel Hill.
Ryan Carr leaves soon for App State.
This won't be easy. These are three I've come to depend on. I can tell them something and it gets done.
Ryan has been helping almost since the very beginning.
Chris did his Sr. project on Homelessness, organized a clothing drive for our guys and completely planned and implemented a meal one night.
Josh was always great for bringing 2 or 3 friends to help.
You'd have trouble finding 3 guys better than these.
But, J. Boggs and Christian Davis have really stepped up lately. I'll be counting on them pretty heavy this year and I think they'll do great. I imagine I will probably be saying nice things about them this time next year, too.
We just got back from Guatemala and one of the things we do over there each year is a food distribution. A local church goes into a village and passes out tickets to families and persons in need. They're told when we'll be there and they bring their ticket which lets them in to receive a large bag of food. The missionary says it is roughly a month's supply for the people. It's basic food staples - rice, flour, salt, noodles, soup packets, oil, etc.
It's my favorite part of the trip. It's mostly little old ladies and mothers with 4 or 5 kids. I like to work the front of the line and pass out the bags they put stuff in because I get to interact with them while they're waiting to come in. I try to say "Dios ben dega" to each of them, which is "God bless you". I'm sure I butchered it, but I hope they could tell from my tone what I meant. Lots of them said it back to me, along with other things that I couldn't translate but it always sounded grateful.
Speaking of which.....apparently the phrase for "Your name is.....?" is very similar to the phrase for "I love you" in Spanish. Or at least the way I try to say it, it is. That's why I was I was informed after going around the work site thinking I had been asking all the locals their names and not getting any answers, that I had actually told everyone there I loved them.
Repeatedly.
Which is cool, except because I was asking them to finish my statement with their name, it came out "I love you.....?" which made it sound as if.....

That's why I was I was informed after going around the work site thinking I had been asking all the locals their names and not getting any answers, that I had actually told everyone there I loved them.
Repeatedly.
Which is cool, except because I was asking them to finish my statement with their name, it came out "I love you.....?" which made it sound as if.....
